I had a wonderful opportunity two days ago to witness about 150 Amish men build a barn. It was quite amazing to see how hard and well they worked together. These men had an entire barn built in about 6 hours! I don’t think I’ve seen this type of efficiency in action ever!
Watching them work and learning about their lifestyle makes me appreciate the modern conveniences we have, and many life lessons we can learn from them, such as:
-It really does take more people than you think to make your life possible. Even something simple as emailing, food shopping and cooking your dinner involves many people (i.e. farmers, drivers, people who made your computer, etc.)
-Less is more. A simple lifestyle can truly make you happier
-There is no excuse not to work unless you are really sick or dying
-Do what it takes to get the job done
-Having a sense of community, and helping others really is a wonderful feeling
-Having a sense of appreciation and compassion is not a sign of vulunerability
Here are a couple of images I managed to get. I tried hard to be respectful and not get in their faces or too close so they could see me taking photos.
